Yamaha US marketing manager Dave Jewell discusses the appeal of Yamaha Rock Tour drums on Farm TV, a web program produced by musical instrument dealer The Music Farm.
Learn about the materials, manufacturing methods, and concepts that are behind the outstanding quality and sound of Yamaha Drums.
For this blog entry we’d like to introduce a unique music-themed hotel that is located in Paris, France, not far from the famed Olympia music hall.
When the Hotel Du Triangle d’Or was last renovated, five famous musicians were enlisted to oversee the design of five of its floors:
1st floor: MC Solaar (Rap)
2nd floor: Manu Katche (Drums)
3rd floor: Archie Shepp (Jazz)
4th floor: Jaques Higelin (Rock)
5th floor: Rickie Lee Jones (Folk)
Manu Katche, a Yamaha drum artist, clearly poured his passion for drums into the design of the second floor.
The bedside lamp tables, for example, are based on Yamaha BFT616 floor toms. A drum set motif is featured on the walls, and splash cymbals are used in the lighting design.
All rooms feature musical motifs applied tastefully to create a warm, relaxing environment, especially for music lovers.
Even the bedside tables and wardrobes are in the shape of flight cases!
The lobby features a special corner where guests can enjoy works by the featured artists.
If you’re planning a trip to Paris, the Hotel Du Triangle d’Or is worth checking out!
Here’s something we never thought we’d see: a car playing the drums!
A new Toyota Lexus commercial directed by Kevin Fitzgerald features twenty Rock Tour drum sets and almost 100 pieces of drum hardware, all supplied by Yamaha of course, being triggered by Toyota’s new Lexus IS to create a short but sweet rock drum track. All the gear was set up in a Boeing aircraft hanger at Long Beach (Ca. USA), carefully positioned on the basis of some tricky math to play the required track as the vehicle drove past the drums at a precisely controlled speed. The engineering wasn’t easy, but the results are awesome! The commercial has been aired on CNN and ABC, and will be featured during the weekend football broadcasts in the US.

Yamaha refers to artists who play our drums as a “family,” and we are always looking for opportunities to bring the family together to exchange ideas and information, and simply to have some fun. John Wittmann, manager of Artist Relations at Yamaha Corporation of America, sums it up nicely: “There’s a rare camaraderie among drummers, especially among those who play Yamaha.”
The latest get-together is a series of three one-day summits. The first two were held in Nashville and New York, and the third will take place in Los Angeles in November. Yamaha Drum Artists who attended were fascinated by multi-media presentations showing the extraordinary care and detail that goes into the production of Yamaha drums. There were also presentations by Yamaha staff explaining the company’s philosophy and policies, and open-forum discussions at which the participation was enthusiastic and a great deal of valuable information was exchanged. A demonstration of the DTX950 electronic drum kit and DTX MULTI-12 electronic percussion pad was well received as well.
The summits have been a positive, enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Here are just two of the many comments we received from artists who attended:
“Thank you for the wonderful afternoon in NYC,” wrote jazz drummer Sherrie Maricle. “Just more confirmation that Yamaha Drums are the best in the world and so are the people who run the company.”
Chris Infusino, a young drummer on the rise, said “The summit was just what I needed. I couldn't be prouder to play Yamaha Drums; they really are the very best -- period. After spending two days with both the American and Japanese cats, it shows that this is truly a family that only cares about creating the very best drums.”
We’re all looking forward to the Los Angeles summit in November!
Yamaha drums are taking an active part in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
The drum set being used was produced specifically for the Olympics, based on the Yamaha Absolute series (Maple Custom Absolute), with a maple leaf design on an Apple Sparkle Fade finish. Apple Sparkle Fade is one of the most beautiful finishes Yamaha produces.
On the night of February 8 a gala event featuring Canadian popular group "Marianas Trench" took place. The band’s drummer, Ian Casselman, played the Yamaha set, attracting the attention of IOC delegates from all 80 countries, many of whom were so impressed by the beauty of this rare drum set that they were moved to take pictures of it as souvenirs of the event.
The drum set will be on the Robson Square stage where it will be seen and heard by an expected 120,000 people over the next two weeks.
