(JPN) Sadao Watanabe N.Y. Quartet at Blue Note Tokyo, with Obed Calvaire

Jazz saxophone legend Sadao Watanabe was at the Tokyo Blue Note from June 28 through July 1 with his N.Y. Quartet, and since Yamaha drummer Obed Calvaire was part of the lineup, we were there to check out the show!

The other distinguished members were Pianist Danny Grissett, who was recently at the Tokyo Cotton Club with Johnathan Blake, and bassist Vicente Archer, who toured Japan with Kendrick Scott in January of this year.

This is a lineup of top-level jazz musicians who are currently and will undoubtedly continue to be major players on the New York jazz scene.

Here’s Obed’s setup for the show: a Maple Custom Absolute kit (discontinued).

The last time Obed was in Japan he played with guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. Obed has also shared the stage with big names such as Mike Stern and Richard bona. He is a young drummer who ably covers styles from four-beat to rock with the confidence and depth you’d expect from a much older player.

Fans will be delighted to know that Obed is scheduled to be back in Japan with Sadao Watanabe this coming Christmas season!
